Red laser illumination delivers increased speed, sensitivity, and signal quality when scanning dark materials such as black rubber tires, and on reddish materials like copper that absorb blue laser light.

Users can also achieve increased speed in their dual- and multi-sensor systems by networking red and blue laser models without the need for exposure multiplexing.

Performance Benefits

Dark/Matte Materials

On dark/matte materials like black rubber tires, red laser light results in a clearer and stronger signal compared to a blue laser on the same material type at similar exposures, providing improved feature detection and increased measurement accuracy.

Most cameras are more sensitive to red light than blue. Using red laser light can allow you to scan with a lower camera exposure time, meaning you scan the target faster, or with a lower laser class than might be required with a blue laser.

Red laser light delivers improved light collection and higher signal quality on reddish-coloured targets like copper automotive stators because these surfaces reflect more red light back to the imager than other colors in the spectrum (such as blue).

Combining Red and Blue Laser Models for Increased Speed in Dual and Multi-Sensor Systems

If you combine blue and red laser sensors (either side by side in a wide layout, or facing each other in an opposite layout), then you don’t have to use exposure multiplexing, because a red sensor won’t “see” the blue sensor’s laser light due, and vice versa, even if their lasers are on at the same time. The elimination of the need for exposure multiplexing results in increased overall system speed, and the elimination of the need to physically offset the sensors results in increased accuracy, especially when measuring in a dynamic system like road and rail. For example, if your application is such that neighboring or alternating sensors only see the “other color” of a different sensor, your system could potentially perform at least 2X as fast compared to what you would have if you were using all blue or all red laser models.
