Glue is widely used in smartphone manufacturing. It can be used for bonding of components and waterproofing. However excess glue can cause glue overflow and part rejection while Insufficient glue can cause poor adhesion and waterproofing failure. In this case study with Engineering Innovation, a single Gocator 2180 3D Laser Line Profile Sensor was installed and integrated in a larger package processing machine. As part of this machine, the Gocator sensor scan and measure all of the varying package types within the desired accuracy and repeatability requirements. The Gocator 2180 is able to measure packages at an accuracy within +/-0.25” tolerance for all dimensions (L, W, H) while processing between 1200 – 4000 pieces per hour. Engineering innovation was also able to safely mount and house the laser-based product in such a way as not to impact the performance of the machine, while still providing maintenance personnel easy access whenever needed.   Founded in 2006, Engineering Innovation, Inc. (Eii) has established itself as a leader in the development of automated equipment for pre-sort mailing applications for commercial mail houses and parcel-handling businesses. Eii offers automation and manifesting solutions for letters, flats, and parcels. LMI sensors can be used at every stage of the shipping process: first, to measure and inspect objects prior to packaging. Second, to inspect the objects when they are inside an open package: for product verification and void filling. And third, to inspect and measure the closed package for shipping.

At LMI, we are excited to be able to provide our automotive partners with cutting edge gap and flush measurement capabilities. For the configuration seen here, we are using one downward facing, ultra-wide field of view Gocator 2490 to determine the 6 degrees of freedom of the vehicle. That information is then relayed to a Kuka robot arm, allowing our buddied, blue line Gocator 2440’s to make detailed gap and flush measurements. Buddied sensors are networked to automatically generate a single, high-accuracy 3D scan of the target. This configuration also solves for any potential occlusions on the scan target.
